Here are a few articles from my Electric Word days:
Here are a couple articles I wrote for Language Industry Monitor:
There are many more of my articles from LIM on the Language Industry Monitor web pages. Future Tense for Euro Systran? appeared in slightly different form in the 9.3 issue (summer ’97) of Language International. It gives a good picture of the use of translation technology at the European Commission. This piece is reprinted in Translating Into Success, Robert Sprung (ed.), John Benjamins, 2000. From Multilingual Computing and Communication, Europe’s Language Technology Push is a brief summary aimed primarily at non-European readers of the European Union’s language technology strategy. Also from the same publication, Jaap van der Meer, a profile of translation industry pioneer. Localising the European Union (PDF file) was published in the summer of 1999 on the Web site of the EU-sponsored e-zine HLT News (formerly Le Journal). If this link doesn’t work, try this local copy Localising the European Union For a now-defunct Dutch DTP magazine called Proof, I interviewd a number of prominent graphic designers and typographers. These included renown British typographer Matthew Carter and Dutch designers and typographers Gerard Unger, Max Kisman, and Willem Velthoven. For its sister magazine, the likewise defunct Software Magzine, I interviewed the brilliant programmer and open software guru Richard Stallman. For KLM’s well-known inflight magazine, I wrote an article on the renovation of Amsterdam's Olympic Stadium, a beautiful specimen of the Amsterdam School style of archicture from the 1920s. |
