The Smart editor, commonly known as MAX, was developed by Smart Communications in the USA as a front end to a translation system introduced in 1987 for such clients as CitiCorp, General Electric, and Ford Motor Company. For the Canadian Ministry of Employment, the company also developed a customized translation system for a sub- language domain.
    The version of MAX used by Bull ilo for controlling input to the machine translation phase was produced in close collaboration with Bull’s us subsidiary and contains a number of straightforward rules for unambiguous written communication. These key constraints cover: maximum twenty-one word sentence length, active voice rather than passive, minimal subordinate structures, no conditionals, and highly limited synonym ranges.
