Over the years, I've done various kinds of writing-for-hire: translating and technical writing in the early days, copywriting, report-writing, and journalism more recently. Journalism is my choice activity, but I find it healthy and useful to take on a variety of work. My specialty has been language technology, but I write about other subjects as well, both in the field of high-tech as well as outside.
Between 1988 and 1990, I had several memorable years working for Electric Word, an offbeat magazine published in Amsterdam from 1986 through 1990. I started writing brief software reviews, then moved on to writing and editing news, and eventually took on feature articles, working together with editors Louis Rossetto and Geoff Pogson.
After the demise of Electric Word, I launched a newsletter, Language Industry Monitor, together with fellow ex-EW contributor and colleague in Paris, Andrew Joscelyne. With the Monitor, we tried to cover some of the same turf as we did in EW, albeit in a more modest fashion. The Monitor appeared from 1991 to 1996.
I currently do writing jobs for various clients here in the Netherlands. On the next page, there are links to various articles of mine.
